In the current economic climate it has become extremely difficult for banks and building societies to raise money whether from one another or through the capital markets. In particular the lack of confidence in mortgage-backed securities has meant that those banks and building societies that were left holding such securities when the music stopped or those that were reliant on raising finance through issuing such securities have been particularly badly affected.
