New research suggests that job vacancies for tax professionals have nearly doubled compared to the position 12 months ago, with over 2,800 vacancies for tax specialists as at October 2021 – a 98% year-on-year increase.

The data, gathered by Morgan McKinley and Vacancysoft, shows that the banking sector is leading the way, with hiring for in-house roles up 162% compared to 2020.

Kathryn Swan, head of professional services at Morgan McKinley, commented: ‘Hiring for tax accountants has grown significantly over 2021 across both the practice and in-house markets. With investment at an all-time high, businesses are strengthening their tax capability to prepare for regulatory requirements — and to arm themselves as the market recovers post-covid.

‘With no signs of the market slowing, we anticipate Q4 and 2022 to show continued growth across accountancy firms and in-house teams, with considerable appetite to both retain and recruit experienced tax professionals with diverse technical backgrounds.’
