How did you end up in tax?

I drifted into tax. Shortly after completing my articles a full page advertisement in The Times newspaper caught my eye. The old Inland Revenue was advertising for lawyers to join their Solicitor's Office. The advertisement referred to the very glamorous sounding International Oil and Gas group. Having joined Solicitor's Office I waited another ten years before finally joining that group!

The best piece of professional advice you’ve been given?

An eminent tax QC advised me many years ago that in order to achieve success in any tax dispute you need a well thought out strategy and game plan. If you simply react to events you are unlikely to achieve a successful outcome. That advice is as good today as it was when first proffered.
