MTD further deferred for public sector bodies

printer Mail

HMRC has informed the professional tax and accountancy bodies that public sector entities using the ‘Government information and NHS Trust’ (GIANT) service will not be able to start using MTD for VAT from 1 October 2019. They will instead be given a further deferral to a date yet to be announced.

HMRC says this further deferral is due to a potential reform to VAT refund rules for central government, with the aim of reducing administrative burdens and improving public sector productivity. The review is still underway, and HMRC will need to consider the outcome in the context of MTD for GIANT customers.

The affected entities should receive a letter from HMRC this week, informing them of the additional deferral period. A further letter will be sent later this summer to give a revised timetable and with a formal extension. See bit.ly/2XnPcBu.
