HMRC hails ‘record’ self-assessment filings

HMRC has released figures showing 11.1m taxpayers filed their 2018/19 self-assessment returns by the 31 January 2020 deadline, with 10.4m filing online. Just under 1m taxpayers missed the deadline.

Allowing for a change in the methodology between 2019 and 2020 behind data in relation to unsolicited returns, the figures for the 31 January 2020 deadline show:

  • 11.7m returns due (against 11.56m in 2019);
  • 11,122,967 returns received by 31 January, including expected returns, unsolicited returns and late registrations (against 10,833,177 in 2019);
  • 10,760,043 expected returns received by 31 January (against 10,468,177 in 2019);
  • 362,924 unsolicited returns/late registrations (against 365,000 in 2019); and
  • 958,296 taxpayers missed the deadline (against 1,096,186 in 2019).
