The Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation (OUCBT) held a conference on tax avoidance in the afternoon of Monday 8 June 2009. More than 100 delegates — from practice industry the press HMRC the Treasury academia and more — enjoyed three hours of thought-provoking comment and debate.
A gesture towards context is necessary to make this report — and indeed the presentations at the conference — more easily comprehensible. 'Tax avoidance' can have a variety of meanings but here the backdrop was provided by the Guardian's recent series on the 'Tax Gap'.
