HMRC announced that they are discussing with ‘interested parties’ an initiative to ‘crack down on VAT rule breakers’. The campaign, to be launched later in the summer, will focus on individuals and businesses who are trading above the VAT threshold but have not yet registered for VAT.

Proposals to counter the marketing and use of ‘high risk’ tax avoidance schemes – still used by a small but significant number of taxpayers, according to HMRC – are set out in a new consultation document.

Any system of enrolment of professional tax agents must be overseen by an independent body, the CIOT’s new President warned as HMRC launched a consultation on the department’s future relationship with the tax agent community.

‘Over the next few months the taxman will dine out in some of London’s finest restaurants. Who will pick up the bill, you ask? We will be, as taxpayers.

HMRC are set to begin a six-month trial of a new, single compliance process for enquiries across a range of taxes.
