HMRC will not pursue cases where the amount owed is less than £300, which account for 40% of all underpayments, David Gauke told MPs.

HMRC will not pursue cases where the amount owed is less than £300 which account for 40% of all underpayments David Gauke told MPs.

Responding to a question in the Commons on 8 September as 45 000 taxpayers were being told that they had paid too much or too little tax under PAYE the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury said HMRC will allow payments to be spread over three years in cases of genuine hardship.

People who have underpaid will make additional payments through the PAYE system provided that the amount due is less than £2 000.

‘If the payment due is more than £2 000 HMRC will contact the individual to discuss the issue ’ he said.
