How to choose a tax agent

printer Mail

HMRC has published new guidance outlining various checks that taxpayers should undertake before appointing an agent to deal with HMRC on their behalf. Top tips to consider from HMRC include:

  • check the agent’s website to see what tax services they offer;
  • read their terms and conditions to understand the fee structure and when payment will be expected;
  • check their reputation and history (for example, via online reviews or Facebook);
  • make sure they have the right experience to help, and can provide all the services that will be required;
  • check that have registered for online access with HMRC; and
  • confirm they are aware of and meet HMRC’s agent standards.
