HMRC has launched its business tax dashboard, an online service aimed at smaller businesses that enables the taxpayer to see the tax position across different business taxes. The service is not available to tax agents.

‘You will be able to see either corporation tax or self assessment information, depending on the type of business you have. You can also view information on VAT and PAYE for employers, if you have set up your business for these online services,’ HMRC said.

‘Agents can still view their client’s tax position for corporation tax and self assessment using the relevant online service,’ it added. The department was 'looking to provide an agent dashboard, and access to view their client’s PAYE for employers and VAT tax position, at a later date’.

The CIOT said it was ‘unfortunate’ that the service was not yet available to agents, who act for the majority of businesses: ‘However, the CIOT and ATT and other professional bodies have been pushing HMRC to build the full functionality for agents. We understand that this is currently being looked at by HMRC.’

Tax agents should not be tempted to ‘borrow’ their clients’ login credentials, the CIOT added.

HMRC’s guidance said: ‘If you want other people in your business to use the dashboard you need to give them administrator access. This gives them the same level of access as you to the account.’ The ICAEW Tax Faculty said the administrator access facility was one way in which an agent could access the service.

Detailed guidance is provided on the HMRC website.
