EU creates expert group on taxing digital economy

printer Mail

A high-level expert group will start work before the end of this year to guide the EU’s approach to taxing the digital economy in a way which allows the sector to develop to its full potential, whilst protecting the tax base in the member states. The group will be comprised of up to seven (as yet, unnamed) members, who will be ‘internationally renowned experts on the digital economy and on taxation’. It will be chaired ‘by a person of political profile with relevant background on such issues’. The group will report back to the European Commission in the first half of 2014. At the same time, the EU will continue to contribute actively to the work underway at global level in this sphere, within the context of the OECD’s base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) project.
