As I retire at the end of this month your Editor has granted me the indulgence of looking back over my career — starting in 1960 as a humble articled clerk in a three-partner firm moving on to earn a princely £1 000 a year on qualifying and spending the last 38 years with Deloitte under its various names. What conclusions do I draw in the field of direct tax?
The march of technology
As an articled clerk I used long division and log tables; even pocket calculators hadn't been invented....
