Taxpayers new to online filing ‘must register by 21 January’

HMRC is reminding taxpayers filing a tax return online for the first time that, when they have registered for the service via www.hmrc.gov.uk/online, a user ID and an activation code will be posted to them ‘within seven working days’.

Guidance on the HMRC website for those who are new to online filing says they must register by 21 January 2011 to avoid missing the 31 January filing deadline: ‘This earlier date is because you'll have to wait for an activation code to be sent to you before you can send in your tax return online – and this can take around a week to arrive.’

‘If you’ve filed online before, make sure that you have your user ID and password – it can take seven working days to get replacements,’ HMRC added.
