The Childcare Payments Act 2014 (Commencement No 1) Regulations, SI 2016/763, appoint 20 July 2016 as the date on which HMRC’s information powers in connection with the new tax-free childcare scheme, and penalties for failure to comply with information notices issued under those powers, take effect. Introduction of tax-free childcare is due to begin in early 2017. The scheme will be based on childcare accounts, into which the government will make top-up payments of up to £2,000 per child per year.
