I am sure we have all heard the one about the callow but aspirational executive from the tax department who approaches the CEO with a wizard tax-saving wheeze. The scheme in question is a fine example of the taxman's alchemy turning taxable profit into … well something else. It represents many hours of concentrated often furtive labour as there is an ever-present danger of someone else in the department picking up on the idea and muscling in on the credit.
 
The executive explains his amazing profit-disappearing trick and stands back justly proud and glowing expectantly. 'And what ' intones a less-than-impressed CEO 'will that do to earnings-per-share?'
