Speed Read: HMRC's Departmental Autumn Performance Report examined progress against six strategic objectives. Separately, the Department has been subject to another Civil Service Capability Review, which has followed up on the 'significant challenges' which came out of its 2007 review. These documents contain numerous insights into the wide range of work now done by HMRC and the numerous organisational issues it faces. For tax practitioners, it is perhaps more relevant to consider how these matters affect themselves and their clients, and a key indicator of this is the 'tax gap'. This was explored in the document 'Protecting Tax Revenues 2009', which was published with the Pre-Budget Report.
