Private-equity-backed companies have had a considerable positive impact on the UK economy. According to the BVCA 1 it is estimated that private businesses that are financed by private equity providers employ around 2.8 million people in the UK equivalent to 19% of UK private sector employees. Measured by sales growth private-equity-backed businesses have also been shown to perform better from an economic perspective than public companies. Over the five years to 2005/06 on average private-equity-backed companies' sales rose by 9% a year compared with FTSE 100 companies (7%) and FTSE Mid-250 companies (5%).
