“HMRC stepped up its crackdown on tax evasion on Tuesday, publishing its second list of ‘deliberate tax defaulters’ on its website. The list includes 15 names owing more than £25,000 in tax, including two pub landlords and a kebab shop owner.
“The publication of HMRC’s first list in February which included a hairdresser and a greengrocer, was criticised at the time for concentrating on small businesses and individuals who between them owed just £1.45m in unpaid tax and fines.
“This time the company owners have been fined amounts ranging between £15,000 and just over £1m for deliberate errors on their tax returns, or for failing to pay. In total, the 15 individuals and small businesses on the latest list owe £4.6m in tax.”
