Plumbers Tax Safe Plan: the view from the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group

In the Plumbers Tax Safe Plan HMRC have offered a disclosure facility to plumbers gas fitters heating engineers and members of associated trades. But will the offer be widely taken up by those at whom it is aimed?
In our view it is unlikely. If plumbers have a tax agent acting for them they should have been paying the correct amount of tax year by year. If they do not have an agent and now they want to wipe the slate clean they will find it difficult – if not impossible – to work through the complicated disclosure process that HMRC have devised.

Pages and pages of detailed notes to read calculations to do jargon to understand and difficult judgment calls to be made. Unrepresented plumbers would be ill advised to attempt to do it for themselves. There is just too much risk...
