How did you end up in tax?

By accident. When I qualified as a chartered accountant I had a concept of trying to get in-depth experience of all areas of accountancy. I started with tax because I had already passed the CIOT’s exam. Fortunately I liked it because in retrospect the original idea was crazy.

Who in tax do you most admire?

Paul Aplin. He always comes over as reasonable and unflappable but that hides a determination to achieve his objective. I think that he has probably achieved more for the ICAEW Tax Faculty in the last five years than I managed to achieve in the previous 25.

What advice would give to someone entering the profession?

Don’t specialise too early. One of the things I find most interesting is the interaction between the different taxes. I think it a shame that so many new entrants to the...
