One minute with... Richard Palmer

How did you end up in tax?

My ambition to be a professional golfer was thwarted by a lack of ability so I studied law at university. The intellectual rigour and forensic analysis of tax law appealed and despite a brief sojourn into the world of private client corporate tax has always and still does seem more challenging.

Who in tax do you most admire?

Augustus Caesar the first creator of an organised tax system and therefore responsible for the legions of tax advisers today. Closer to home my former colleague John Watson; a lawyer of such technical creativity that he could construct an argument to make the most hopeless tax position seem entirely meritorious.

What are you working on?

A restructuring of a Hong Kong based chemicals group prior to the introduction of a new investor and the acquisition of a portfolio...
