How did you end up in tax?

As a former English student in a law conversion class I saw an opportunity. Most of my contemporaries thought tax law was about numbers. It’s not. It is all words.

What advice would you give to someone entering the profession?

Don’t specialise too early but work out soon what area you like and zero in on it steadily.

What are you working on?

Amongst other things I’m looking at how we should change the EU VAT Directive so that e-books can be zero rated in 2015 when the place of supply changes to the UK.

Is there a problem you come across time and again?

Predicting the future direction of tax policy is always tricky. What do you say to non-doms today for instance?
