How did you end up in tax?

I looked for a career that was recession resistant and paid a premium – how crass but honest.

Who in tax do you most admire?

To name one John Whiting. He has an innate ability to make complex issues understandable. There is also another PwC partner I won’t name but he believed in me.

What work is keeping you busy?

Read the press; we are all facing similar issues and the BBC is often in the public eye. Tax has never had the media exposure it currently does. Managing that risk through perceptions is likely to be challenging. Personally we are always open and transparent; the risk is that the complex nature of our discipline can lead to misinterpretation absent detail and context.

How do you see the in-house tax function evolving?

I think it will become more integrated...
