I expect you will be very pleased or even relieved to learn that this will be my very last epistle to you as Chancellor of the Exchequer. It is not that I have grown weary over the years of having my well-intentioned advice spurned more times than not which has persuaded me to put down my vitriolic quill. Nor are the rumours true that I am taking up the post of the England cricket team's batting coach or that the Editor of this estimable publication has finally seen fit to curtail my literary contributions as they are not up to the exemplary standard she expects.
