A long time ago in a far distant galaxy where I used to work for a strange and shadowy organisation called the Inland Revenue we had a useful phrase that went 'The answer's a lemon'.
This was generally considered to be a smart thing to say. Or rather identifying the opportunity to deploy it was smart: it wasn't one of those universal 'Oneupmanship' phrases that can be injected into a conversation to imply superior wisdom (the great Stephen Potter himself used to recommend 'But not in the South' for this purpose). Oh no you had to know when to use it.
Correct usage was when a colleague had with much erudition and copious reference...
