Before I assumed the mantle of Indirect Tax Conference Reporter a few years ago it had been traditional to commence the report with a discussion of the travel arrangements en route to the venue as a means presumably of whetting the reader's appetite in some way that never communicated itself to me. I vowed as my first principle on taking over the job never to do the same. I am thus unable to explain why I arrived too late to hear the introductions and must assume that you will all be satisfied with a near-complete view of the opening talk in the Customs Chamber.
