Sovereign wealth funds have seemingly become more prominent in recent years but they are not a new phenomenon: the Kuwait Investment Authority for example has been around for more than 60 years. They are helping to fund the current need for capital particularly by the banks but what are they why they are important in the current climate why are they different from any other type of investment fund from a tax perspective and what structuring considerations flow from that? This article aims to address these questions.
