The Public Bill Committee began discussing the Finance Bill on Tuesday 6 May. The Committee includes 19 Labour MPs 10 Conservatives four Liberal Democrats and Stewart Hosie of the SNP.
Connoisseurs of previous Committees may be disappointed to see that Labour backbencher Rob Marris who had been the sole Labour member to voice significant criticisms of some Government proposals in 2007 has not been included on this year's Committee. Conservative spokesman Philip Hammond (Runnymede & Weybridge) commented during the opening exchanges:
