Measuring the Tax Gap 2010 published on 16 September 2010 estimates employment tax shortfalls of anywhere between £1.3 billion and £2.7 billion over the period 2008–2010 and we have since learned that HMRC may invest more on compliance. One area that has paid well for HMRC has been employer reviews of company expatriate staff.

How does HMRC approach this work?

The HMRC office at Trinity Bridge House in Salford houses an expatriate tax team which acts as both a customer service desk for inbound expatriate tax matters and also a compliance unit. It is charged with carrying out expatriate employer compliance reviews and personal tax enquiries predominately involving inbound assignees to the UK.
