During this General Election campaign the focus of debate has rightly been on what each party will do to reduce the deficit and bring the budget back under control. The Liberal Democrats' manifesto spells out the most credible rigorous plan of any party detailing a radical tax package and identifying specific areas of spending where we can make savings.
There is a fundamental unfairness in our tax and benefits system which is in desperate need of radical reform. The Liberal Democrats will raise the basic rate income tax personal allowance to £10 000 putting £700 in the pockets of millions of people on low and middle incomes and lifting 3.6 million people out of income tax altogether. We will pay for this tax cut by closing tax loopholes and allowances which benefit the wealthiest and by introducing new taxes on pollution.
