To Comply Or Not To Comply — That Is The Question

Doug Tweddle Director Local Compliance explains HMRC's compliance strategy and how it will be developed in the future
The principal objectives of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are to collect both direct and indirect taxes while also minimising the cost of compliance. A range of policies have been developed to ensure the correct amount of tax is paid or reimbursed and that support is provided to individual taxpayers businesses and their representatives.
The wide range of taxes we collect — and the exemptions and variations within them — means we have also developed individual compliance strategies for specific types of tax. These support an overall strategy which encourages taxpayers to comply and deploys our resources where we believe taxpayers are less likely to comply.
