Stephen Edge of Slaughter and May reports on the City reaction to the Finance Bill
Following on from a budget deemed to be largely a non-event in City terms those City tax advisers who went home comparatively early on Budget Day will no doubt have been surprised to see a two-part 450 page Finance Bill thump onto their desks a few weeks later.
This may be a reflection of two things first this Government's desire to tinker with the nuts and bolts of the tax system and secondly the growing practice of consulting widely on legislation outside the Budget process so that the Budget itself is a less significant event.
