G20 finance ministers have dropped proposals for a global banking tax following opposition from several countries led by Canada. George Osborne is however likely to bring forward plans for a levy on UK-based banks in his Budget on 22 June. The Chancellor's team has indicated that this approach is likely also to be adopted by the US and other European Governments.
