A builder who evaded around £65,000 of income tax and NICs over 27 years was jailed for 14 months after pleading guilty to fraud at Grimsby Crown Court at the end of last month.
HMRC said Harry Rowbottom, aged 58, of Meadow Drive, Barton upon Humber, set up a general building and gas fitting business in 1983 and worked across North Lincolnshire and Humberside, but ‘never declared his earnings’ to HMRC.
Rowbottom was ordered to repay the full amount of tax and interest of £117,000 within six months or face a further two years and three months in prison.
His conviction followed HMRC investigations targeting plumbers, gas fitters and heating engineers who failed to participate in the Plumbers Tax Safe Plan which closed last year, the department said. ‘Those who came forward have already paid over £4m in outstanding tax and HMRC continue to pursue those who have not yet declared their correct tax position, so that everyone pays their fair share.’
