Robin Williamson discusses a new report by LITRG Community Links and the Child Poverty Action Group on whether the tax/benefits system encourages work
 
Amid the welter of media criticism that has attended the tax credits system since it began the real progress the Government has made towards attaining its goals of ending child poverty and increasing employment is often lost sight of. The number of children living in poverty has fallen by 600 000 since 1999 1 the employment rate for people of working age is 74.4% 2 including a 27% rise in lone parent employment since 1997 3 and tax credits are the predominant policy instrument by which that has been achieved.
