In fact if you will pardon the presumption I bet you think of it as a necessary evil. 'The price we pay for living in a civilised society' you explain to reluctant Revenue customers who may otherwise be inclined to use unhelpful phrases on the lines of 'legalised theft morelike'.
You may therefore be surprised when I tell you that tax is far more than just a necessary evil. It is not merely the price to be paid for civilised society: it is the very bedrock of what we choose to call civilisation.
