HMRC has published Agent update: issue 84 (May 2021) providing a round-up of recent developments for tax agents and advisers. HMRC now intends to publish Agent update on a monthly basis, rather than once every two months, with the next instalment due on 16 June 2021.

Issue 84 brings together the latest technical updates and reminders, including the following:

  • latest updates to the coronavirus job retention scheme (CJRS) guidance, including the changes to furlough payment percentages for July to September 2021;
  • reminder of the 6 July 2021 deadline for reporting expenses and benefits for the tax year ending 5 April 2021;
  • updated HMRC guidance on the trust registration service;
  • new guidance on the claims process for the temporary extended carry-back of trading losses arising in accounting periods ending between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2022;
  • VAT reverse charge for construction services, which came into force on 1 March 2021;
  • reminder of the payroll requirements for employers which provide medical benefits through payrolling benefits in kind or the legacy P11D process, where the medical provider has made refunds; and
  • publication of initial guidance on the new plastic packaging tax to help manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging, and businesses that buy plastic packaging, prepare for the tax.
