Academies and VAT

Question

 
I have a number of secondary school clients. At present they send all of their sales and purchase information to the local authority which includes the VAT on its VAT return. The schools will be converting to academies over the next 12 to 24 months possibly as part of multi-academy trusts with a number of other schools in the area. Are they required to submit VAT returns immediately following the conversion?

In the 2016 March Budget the government announced that all schools must convert to academies or be in the process of converting to academies by 2020. Whilst the Department of Education has amended its draft policy since that initial announcement the overall strategy to convert schools to academies survives. This means that many...
